PLATEAU STATE HIGH COURT OF JUSTICE SENTENCES TWO TO DEATH BY HANGING FOR HOMICIDE

The Plateau State High Court has sentenced two persons, Thomas Danboyi and Pam Lang, to death by hanging for their roles in the killing of one Chung Bot.  The verdict was delivered by the Chief Judge of Plateau State, Hon. Justice David Gwong Mann, at the High Court in Jos. In the case, State vs. Thomas Danboyi & Pam Lang (Charge No. PLD/J112C/2010), the court found the defendants guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, offenses punishable under the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, 1963 (then applicable to Plateau State). According to the prosecution, led by Plateau State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. P.A. Daffi and a team of lawyers, the crime occurred on April 26, 2010, at Tahai Gyel Bukuru in Jos South Local Government Area. Labour threatens action over Rivers emergency rule

The Organized Labor is warning that it may be forced to take decisive action that could lead to a total shut down of the economy if the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers state is not reversed within a reasonable timeframe. The threat was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Rivers State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Alex Agwanwor; State Chairperson of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Ikechukwu Onyefuru; and Chairperson of the Joint Negotiation Council, JNC, Chuku Emecheta. As you may be aware, several individuals and groups have raised concerns including the constitutionality of the emergency rule and the unions have got similar worries including the legality, economic impact, and consequences of the federal government’s actions.   The Federal High Court in Abuja has been urged to sack Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, declaring his appointment unconstitutional. 25 Mar, 2025 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been dragged to court over the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, rtd as the Sole Administrator of Rivers state A legal practitioner, Johnmary Jideobi, asked the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to sack Rivers' Sole Administrator Jideobi argued that the appointment of Sole Administrator in Rivers State is unconstitutional, null and void, and of no legal effect whatsoever. Rivers sole administrator appoints Prof Ibibia Lucky Worika as SSG

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), has appointed a university lecturer, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika, as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). 25 Mar, 2025 This follows after the resignation of the State Head of Service, Dr George Nwaeke.  In his statement the chief of staff thanked the resigned head of service for his service to the state and wished him well in his future endeavours. The Permanent Secretary Welfare, Office of the Head of Service has been appointed in acting capacity until a new Head of Service is appointed,” the statement said. NERC: DisCos collected ₦509.84bn in Q4 2024

  The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday announced that Electricity Distribution Companies collected ₦509.84 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024 (Q4 2024) out of the ₦658.40 billion billed to customers. This was disclosed in NERC’s 2024 Fourth Quarter Report, published on its website in Abuja. According to the report, this translates to a collection efficiency of 77.44 per cent. “In comparison, DisCos collected ₦466.69 billion in the third quarter of 2024 (Q3 2024) from the ₦626.02 billion billed, resulting in a 74.55 per centcollection efficiency.” It said that the 77.44 per cent efficiency recorded in Q4 2024 represented an increase of 2.89 percentage points compared to Q3 2024’s 74.55 per cent. According to the report, a comparison of DisCos’ performance shows that eight DisCos improved their collection efficiency between Q3 and Q4 2024, with Yola and Kano DisCos recording the most significant improvements.

Breaking News: Full-Time HND students are now cleared for NYSC mobilization in Nigeria.

The Federal Government has announced that all full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates will now be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa stated this after a meeting with the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu. According to the Minister, only full-time HND graduates are eligible for mobilisation. The resolution of the long-standing issue regarding their mobilisation for national service is contained in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday night. The release was signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry, Folasade Boriowo. Recall that in August 2024, the Corps had said polytechnic graduates or holders of the Higher National Diploma without evidence of undertaking the mandatory 12-month industrial training would not be registered at the NYSC orientation camp to participate in the national youth service; a move that sparked outrage across the country ...

Gwallameji, a student-dominated area in Buachi, is grapple with water scarcity crisis. The situation has left students struggling to access clean water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. A severe water scarcity crisis has hit the Gwallameji community,bon student both in-campus and off-campus. Since early February, residents and students have been struggling to access clean water, forcing them to go long distances to fetch water for basic necessities. This water shortage has affected  daily routines and academic activities of students, as students must spend hours queuing for water.    March 19, 2025 The bill proposing amendment to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, to require social media platforms to establish physical offices within the country on Tuesday 19th March, 2025 has passed second reading in the Senate. According to Senator Nwoko, this measure is intended to promote accountability, transparency, and professionalism in Nigeria’s digital media space, similar to traditional media houses, just as he asserts that the bill is not an attack on social media platforms but a demand for equity and respect for Nigeria’s position as a global leader in digital engagement. The bill also proposes new regulations for bloggers operating in Nigeria. ILLEGAL DETENTION: Court Awards N45million Damages Against Nigerian Army.

  Hon. Justice Nankwat Shaseet of High Court 11, Plateau State on Thursday 13th March, 2025 awarded the sum Forty Five Million Naira against the Nigerian Army for unlawful detention and damages of a Secondary School Teacher and POS Operator, Nansak Selbar. He was detained for 27 days without being charged in court, leading to claims of illegal arrest, detention, and torture. The court found that the Nigerian Army, violated Selbar's constitutional rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement. The Army failed to present sufficient evidence to support the allegations of ransom collection or impersonation, deeming the accusations speculative.  The court awarded N45 million in exemplary damages for the unlawful detention but rejected a claim for torturing Selbar.
